Barrow House, Cowan's Public: Brothers behind NJ restaurants

When they learned that John Cowan, a friend of the family, was set to sell the Nutley Pub, they decided to join forces and try their hand at hospitality. "We're in the business of making people happy," said Thomas, 34, CEO of Skopos; Dean, 37, is creative director. In other words, a happy place, at least as some of us imagined it, a place the brothers opine we may need even more today than we did, say, a mere 19 months ago, a place where we can leave all our cares and woes at the door. Walk into any one of brothers Dean and Thomas Maroulakos gastropubs in North Jersey — there are five currently; more to come shortly — and you'll be pulled back in time to an America that you have never lived through. The cocktails, all priced at $13, are carefully crafted to complement the menu and ambiance.

They scraped the ceiling and exposed its gorgeous tin, reframed the "rotted wood" of the curved bar, built an Art Deco bar cabinet, installed custom stained glass, put in textured glass windows and added a roaring fireplace. Their bars, famous for their wide selection of craft beer and perfectly made cocktails (right-sized ice cubes, homemade syrups, fresh juices) are big, clamorous and designed to please all. The concept for The Barrow House came from brothers Thomas & Dean Maroulakos, who have a passion for creating spaces that send guests on a time-traveling adventure while delivering an elevated dining experience.

An America of boisterous taverns, sultry speakeasies, rustic parlor rooms, factory mess halls and 1950s cellar bars. An America that loved to drink without worry, eat without calorie-counting and socialize in person. Take their very first spot, Cowan's Public, once the well-known Nutley Pub that closed in 2014. It took them more than a year to resurrect it into an uber-charming public house with speakeasy vibes.

The Food

The Steel Magnolia is smokey and spicy, while Mother’s Little Helper is smooth and tart. The Beyond Burger is such a fan favorite amongst vegetarians and carnivores alike, it’s almost always on the menu. The chicken Milanese gets the crispiness just right and the Caprese-style topping is the ideal accompaniment. The most recent theme this spring, Through the Looking Glass, was based on Alice in Wonderland and featured specialty food and drink items like Down the Rabbit Hole, a cocktail with Rabbit Hole Gin, aloe liqueur, coconut, and honeydew. Camp Barrow, which debuted just a few days ago, promises to deliver all the warm and fuzzy memories from summer camp.

The Barrow House: A Colonial Era Farmhouse-Turned-Restaurant in Clifton

The Barrow House does a wonderful job of transporting you to a different time and place all while wowing the taste buds. During COVID-19, the restaurant’s outdoor dining series premiered with Stranded in Paradise, a tropical oasis filled with palm trees, cocktail umbrellas, and serious tiki vibes, and it has been keeping guests coming back for more ever since. Read on to learn more about The Barrow House in Clifton and all it has to offer.

Ditto The Barrow House, their second spot, a rundown 19th-century farmhouse, which in 2016 they turned into a striking 230-seat restaurant and bar with colonial American allure. Dean, Thomas recalled, hand brushed the walls nearly a half dozen times to get the perfect aged look. The Barrow House is a 19th-century farmhouse turned restaurant and bar located at 1296 Van Houten Avenue in Clifton that specializes in rustic American cuisine, unique cocktails, and craft beers. It has become a staple in the local dining and bar scene, and rightfully so.

Still they insisted on applying the same attention to detail in every restaurant that followed. And they found reproduction Chapel chairs, gas light fixtures and oil lamps for Franklin Social, a 2,500-square-foot colonial-era tavern in Jersey City they opened that same year. It's the kind of tavern that, they said, Ben Franklin would have patronized, the kind in which people meet, hang and exchange ideas.

A post and beam barn was added to the property with a retractable Kal-Wall Roof for open air dining in the warmer months. Reclaimed barn wood was utilized for elements throughout combined with historical wallpaper and stenciling to tell the story of early farm life in the area. The Barrow House offers happy hour Monday through Friday at the wood-paneled bar, where from 3PM to 6PM patrons can enjoy $5 well drinks, $2 off wines by the glass and draft beers, plus a few specialty cocktails every day. After graduating, Dean worked for a Broadway costume designer and helped him design a few bars and restaurants.

The Barrow House also has a private event space located in the rear of the house and an outdoor seating area, which features different themes throughout the year.

Thomas went on to work for Barneys New York in Brooklyn but left to become a professional beer brewer. He loves the theater, checking out new bars and restaurants and throwing dinner parties for friends. Asked what nickname he'd give himself, he thought for a moment, then quipped, "icing on the cake."

A nice rustic location for cocktails and food to hangout and talk with friends. I’ve mainly stayed in the bar area but they do have a dining and lounge area. Styled as a 19th Century Farmhouse, on once thriving farmland, The Barrow House is composed of a series of rooms, each of which tells its own unique story inspired by early farm life in North Jersey.

And while they love what they do — "I love leadership. I love working with people," Thomas said; "I love seeing people happy," said Dean, "but I don't love my commute or meetings." — they make sure to have a balanced life. The Low-Country Cornbread appetizer is perfectly sweet yet light, and the classic cheeseburger always hits the spot. The house, which is styled after a colonial-era home and made up of seven different rooms, sits on land that formerly operated as a farm. When diners enter, they are immediately transported to a cozy farmhouse fully equipped with fireplaces and oversized lounge chairs.

Opportunities to open more gastropubs that, no doubt, will be designed to take us back to our supposed halcyon past, "to what we imagine as simpler times," Dean said. And while they claim to be different — "as night and day," Thomas said — they manage to work well together. "We may disagree sometimes, but we're family, we work it out," Dean said. Don’t forget about the wine list, which is filled with unique offerings by the glass and by the bottle. The beer list is made up of about ten selections that are always on the menu, including a special brew made in collaboration with a local brewery, and ten more seasonal selections.

The Barrow House is a Colonial-Era Farmhouse restaurant located in Clifton, NJ on the site of a former farm. Modeled after a traditional Hall & Parlor Home, the space is comprised of seven unique rooms. Guests can enjoy options from our rustic American Farm Fare menu (ranging from salads, tacos, burgers and entrees), 100 bottle curated wine list, handcrafted cocktails, & robust selection of craft beer.
